Field Trip 2 - My First Apartment!

Field Trip 2 - My First Apartment!

For this field trip 2, I will be exploring and sketching scenes of my apartment as I’ve just recently moved into my first one with my boyfriend. We are living in Jamaica, Queens. I am moving back to the city after living upstate in a middle of nowhere town, for nearly almost a year. It has been very interesting and fun being back, but it’s also brought about its own challenges. Jamaica is one of the most ethnically diverse places in the world which I think is super cool. And, as we all know, there are many people here, so it’s been a stark contrast that I’ve been experiencing. With the population being so dense and me being exposed to so many new people and things, I can see how we immediately got sick. And so since moving in 2 weeks ago, I’ve unfortunately been sick with covid. As I’ve been quarantining, my field trip will be sketches of my messy apartment as we have been doing our best to furnish our home. It’s been challenging navigating living on our own for the first time and being “real” adults while also being sick and being in school, but we are doing our best! Our apartment is in a beautiful brick house and I am on the third floor. There are many windows for me to look outside at, which is nice because I can see so many things going on and the lighting is great for art making. I can’t wait till we have more energy to fully finish setting up everything, but for now I hope you enjoy the transparency that is the chaos of my first 2 weeks of living in my apartment.

Directions:

To get from St. John’s University to Jamaica, Queens, you can take a quick trip by either walking, taking a bus, or driving. The most straightforward public transit option is the Q46 bus, which you can catch on Union Turnpike; it will take you directly to the Jamaica Center–Parsons/Archer station, where you can easily access the E subway line if needed. The walk is also an option and will take about 30 minutes, covering around 1.5 miles if you head west on Union Turnpike. If you drive, it’s a brief 10-minute trip via Union Turnpike or Parsons Blvd, depending on traffic conditions.

Materials I’ll be using:

- 5.5x8.5 in. sketch book.

- graphite
